green tea corn flakes and banana milk
The last day of June and here we are, finishing off the box of improbable cereal. Actually, we bought something Post with dried fruit when we went grocery shopping over the weekend, so I think we are safe so as long as we can get through these last few bowlfuls. It still tastes unremarkable, but is aesthetically oddly pleasing. Somewhat like 80s fashion — it shouldn’t be right, and really, it isn’t, but you accept it for what it is and you revel in it. Monday is here again.

“French Pie” and banana milk
What’s so French about it, I would like to know? Well, anyway, here’s another old staple from the days of yore. I actually bought a box for the kids I would be coaching in debate, since the class started at midnight and I thought that was crazy enough for them to want a bite of something. I was famished by then, definitely, and I was already halfway through when the kids started arriving. And I think something like two of them accepted. Huh. It’s not that these are bad, because honestly, even though they’re not the first choice on anybody’s list of favorite snacks, it is pretty much undeniable that they taste good. Logically, by midnight, they should taste fantastic. I just don’t understand what goes on in their heads — why would you ever decline free food? Or maybe they were just too tired to eat anything, I guess I could understand that. But anyway the point is that I have nearly a whole box of these left and my father and I are eating them every chance we get.

banana milk and half-cooked egg with crackers
Egg is egg and crackers are crackers, but the real star of this meal is the banana milk. They’re smart not to have changed the packaging in the decades that it’s existed — lots of people don’t go around memorizing what company the milk is from, but it’s that shape they reach for anyway. And it still tastes the same, doesn’t it, like when after school you would drop by the corner store and buy a bag of snacks for a dime.
